Subject Knowledge Enhancement: Teacher assistant  

The Teacher Assistant Subject Knowledge Enhancement Work Group has the aim to support teaching assistants (TAs) in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in the maths classroom. Work Groups will explore maths in depth, making connections between topics and concepts. Participants will also work collaboratively, led by a local leader of maths education (LLME) to develop deep and secure subject knowledge and appropriate pedagogy so they are well-equipped to support pupils.

The programme is based on the four core modules for primary:

  • Number sense

  • Additive reasoning

  • Multiplicative reasoning

  • Fractions.

The Work Group aims for participations are:

  • Participants will enhance their maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on the key structures in each mathematical area covered e.g.

  •  Understand the key elements that form number sense, including precise language, structures and representations.

  •  Understand the forms of addition and subtraction, including the precise language, structures, and representations.

  •  Understand the forms of multiplication and division, including the precise language, structures and representations.

  •  Understand the forms of fractions, including precise language, structures and representations.
