Mastering Number at Reception and KS1

This programme supports schools to strengthen pupils’ understanding of number from Reception through to Key Stage 1, building firm mathematical foundations and improving fluency for all children.

 

 

What will you learn?

Your pupils will be able to clearly communicate their mathematical ideas.

You will:

  • Develop a secure understanding of how to build firm mathematical foundations
  • Develop intentional teaching strategies focused on fluency in calculation and number sense
  • Develop understanding and use of appropriate manipulatives to support teaching of mathematical structures

Programme Structure

This programme includes:

  • Central training (both online and face-to-face)
  • Access to a range of pupil-facing resources
  • Ongoing collaboration through an online community to share practice and reflect critically
  • Schools are expected to deliver a daily 10–15 minute number session for all children, alongside normal maths lessons

Who should attend

Three lead teachers from each participating school:

  • One from Reception
  • One from Year 1
  • One from Year 2
  • Subject leaders and headteachers will also receive support to help implement the programme effectively
  • Open to all state-funded primary schools in England that have not previously engaged with the Mastering Number Programme

In this video, Debbie Morgan, the NCETM’s Director for Primary, explains the rationale for the programme and how the abacus-like rekenrek can be used to help children develop confidence and fluency with number.  Use of a rekenrek is just one element of the Mastering Number Programme.
