Primary Teachers – developing a specialist knowledge in mathematics

This programme supports primary teachers to enhance subject knowledge, develop practice, and strengthen understanding of teaching for mastery.

 

What will you learn?

There are two pathways for this Work Group: Number and Spatial Reasoning. During 2025–2026, the Number pathway will be the focus, with participants continuing to the Spatial Reasoning pathway during 2026–2027.

Practice Development:

  • Explore and increase the use of a variety of pedagogic approaches aligned with teaching for mastery
  • Build confidence in planning for progression in maths

Professional Learning:

  • Enhance maths subject knowledge, focusing on key concepts, representations and language (e.g. additive reasoning, multiplicative reasoning, spatial reasoning)
  • Identify common misconceptions and strategies to address them for concept mastery
  • Identify and plan pedagogical approaches that enhance teaching and learning in maths
  • Develop understanding of key principles and approaches related to teaching for mastery

Programme Structure

This programme includes:

  • Four days of sessions over one academic year
  • Structured conversations focused on maths, pedagogy, misconceptions and transferring approaches into the classroom
  • Between sessions, participants engage with an online community, complete school-based tasks, and share observations with peers
