Primary Teaching Assistants – developing a specialist knowledge in mathematics

This programme supports primary teaching assistants to develop subject knowledge, strengthen practice, and build confidence in supporting pupils in mathematics.

 

What will you learn?

Practice Development:

  • Explore and increase the use of a range of pedagogic approaches aligned with teaching for mastery
  • Build confidence in supporting pupils to master mathematical concepts

Professional Learning:

  • Enhance maths subject knowledge, focusing on key concepts, representations and language (e.g. number sense, additive reasoning, fractions)
  • Identify common misconceptions and strategies to address them for concept mastery
  • Identify and apply pedagogical approaches that enhance teaching and learning in maths
  • Develop understanding of key principles and approaches related to teaching for mastery

Programme Structure

This programme includes:

  • Four days of sessions over one academic year
  • Structured conversations focused on maths, pedagogy, misconceptions and transferring approaches into the classroom
  • Between sessions, participants engage with an online community, complete school-based tasks, and share observations with peers
