Primary Teachers – developing a specialist knowledge in mathematics

What will you learn? 

There are two pathways for this Work Group: Number and Spatial Reasoning. During 2025-2026, the Number pathway will be the focus and participants will continue on to the Spatial Reasoning pathway during 2026-2027.  

 

 

Practice Development: 

  • Explore and increase use of a variety of pedagogic approaches aligned with teaching for mastery. 

  • Build confidence in planning for progression in maths. 

Professional Learning: 

  • Enhance maths subject knowledge, focusing on key concepts, representations, and language (e.g., additive reasoning, multiplicative reasoning, spatial reasoning). 

  • Identify common misconceptions and strategies to address them for concept mastery. 

  • Identify and plan pedagogical approaches that enhance teaching and learning in maths. 

  • Develop understanding of key principles and approaches related to teaching for mastery. 

Who can take part? 

  • Primary teachers  

What is involved? 

  • Participants will attend four days of sessions over one academic year. 

  • Structured conversations will focus on maths, pedagogy, misconceptions, and transferring approaches to classrooms. 

  • Between sessions, participants contribute to an online community, complete school-based tasks, and share observations with peers.
