Teaching Assistants – developing a specialist knowledge in mathematics

This programme supports teaching assistants to enhance their mathematical subject knowledge and develop confidence in supporting pupils in KS3 maths.

 

What will you learn?

Enhance your maths specialist knowledge, with a particular focus on mathematical structures and representations in the following areas:

  • Addition and subtraction (extending to negative numbers)
  • Multiplication and division (extending to negative numbers)
  • Fractions, ratio and proportion

Programme Structure

This programme includes:

  • Four days of sessions over one academic year
  • Structured conversations focused on maths, pedagogy, misconceptions and transferring approaches into the classroom
  • Between sessions, participants engage with an online community, complete school-based tasks, and share observations with peers

Who should attend

  • Teaching assistants who work for most of their time with students in KS3 maths classrooms, or who lead intervention sessions with groups of students
  • Participants’ schools should already be engaged with a Teaching for Mastery Work Group, and this programme will complement this provision
