  • Teaching for Mastery Toolkit Work Groups

    Who can take part

    • Schools who have previously participated in a Secondary Teaching for Mastery Work Group or have had a Mastery Specialist completing their training whilst in their department

     

     

    •  Each school will nominate two teachers to take part. Participants should be well-placed to lead change within the department.

    • deepen your understanding of teaching for mastery and how to embed it consistently

    • improve collaborative approaches to planning, teaching and curriculum development

    • build a culture of sustained professional learning through collaboration

    • choose a focus area that aligns with your department’s priorities with resources to support it

    Developing collaborative planning/observation within maths departments 

    • Work in a small group of local schools led by an experienced Mastery Specialist

    • Teaching for Mastery Principles – Ensuring deep understanding and sustained progress.

    • Joint Lesson Planning – Working together to design effective, mastery-based lessons.

    • Lesson Observations – Gaining insights through structured peer observation and reflection.

    • Professional Dialogue – Discussing best practices to refine teaching approaches.

    • A shared journey to enhance mathematical understanding in every classroom.

    Developing coherence across maths and science departments

    • Collaborative Planning – Maths and Science colleagues working together to align teaching approaches.

    • Teaching for Mastery Principles – Strengthening connections between mathematical reasoning and scientific application.

    • Integrated Lesson Design – Creating coherence in concepts to enhance student understanding.

    • Cross-Subject Consistency – Ensuring seamless progression in problem-solving and analytical thinking.

    • A unified approach to deepen students’ conceptual understanding across both disciplines.

    Developing an understanding of secondary TfM

    • Teachers from TfM schools where the teacher involved has had limited or no direct experience with Teaching for Mastery through Maths Hubs.

    • Educators seeking a refresher on Teaching for Mastery principles to strengthen their approach.

    • Opportunities to deepen understanding and engage with the Maths Hubs network for effective mastery implementation.
